Animal experiments are very common today, and they are usually conducted to test new medicines and their safety. Many people are of the opinion that these experiments on animals should be banned as they are morally incorrect while there are others who stand for such tests, considering the myriad benefits to humanity. I, for one, am inclined more towards these experiments as a means to develop new medicines to combat human diseases.
It is true that the question of ethics arises when we talk about these experiments on animals. Animals like mice might be tested in laboratories by actually injecting them with an illness to examine the potential of a new drug on it. It is mostly argued by people who are against animal testing that humans have no prerogative to inflict harm on animals or make them suffer for their gains. They also believe that all living creatures (regardless of their level of intelligence), should be valued and respected and that there should be alternative techniques to check the safety or functionality of drugs.
However, on the other hand, it is also true that such “alternative ways” do not yet exist. The people who stand for animal experimentation argue that it is justifiable to inflict some harm on animals if it results in saving human lives. They also affirm that it is easy for people to be indignant about animal testing and state reasons for it being unethical because they are bystanders being asked for an opinion on a general topic. However, if it comes to the family member of a person who is afflicted with an incurable disease, he/she is likely to support animal experimentation to save his/her loved one.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that though animal testing is not the most humane ways to find new and improved drugs for human use, it is the only reliable technique through which we can save human lives and procreate.
