More than 5.4 million Americans live with Alzheimer, a disease that involves an abnormal build-up of proteins in the brain’s memory circuits. One in three seniors will die with Alzheimer or another dementia. Once diagnosed, most people live another six to nine years, during which time the disease causes the function of their brain circuits to deteriorate irreversibly.

According to ecologists, having a personality means showing a consistent pattern of behaviour over time. Researchers from the University of Arizona studied colonies of rock ants across the western US, both by following them in the wild and by taking whole colonies back to the lab. They found that certain risky behaviors, like foraging widely for food and responding aggressively to a threat, went together, and colonies further north tended to take more of these risks.

Although Valentine’s Day has become a global industry with more than 80 million roses sold worldwide, the origins of the day are unclear and hidden in the mists of time. Nobody knows exactly who St Valentine was, although some historians suggest he was a Roman martyred in the third century AD by a Roman Emperor. It is said that the first recorded Valentine’s card was sent by the imprisoned Duke of Orleans in 1415.
