PTE Academic Writing Tips : 7 Words To Avoid In Essay Writing

PTE Academic Writing Tips: There are some words students use in academic writing that could be said to be overused or unnecessary. The presence of these words make your writing sound casual and colloquial. In order to maintain a professional writing appearance, you need to avoid these words. I have created the following list of words, you need to avoid while writing academic paper.

PTE Academic Writing Tips : 7 Words To Avoid In Essay Writing

1. Very

Accurate adjectives don’t need qualifiers. If you need to qualify it? Replace it with another verb for whatever you are trying to enhance.

He is very tired. (wrong)
He is exhausted. (correct)

Words to use instead:

2. Really

Similar to “very,” the use of “really” isn’t often necessary in clear, concise writing. It’s a verbal emphasis that doesn’t translate perfectly into text. Avoid using it in your sentences.

A rock is really hard. (wrong)
A rock is hard. (correct)

Words to use instead: precisely, assuredly, veritably, distinctly, unequivocally.

3. Contractions (Can’t, won’t, you’ve…)

Don’t be lazy while writing your PTE Academic Exam and avoid using contractions like can’t, won’t, you’ve. Present yourself as an expert and use the original form of the word.

The character isn’t aware that he’s surrounded by people he can’t trust. (wrong)
The character is not aware that he is surrounded by people he cannot trust. (correct)

4. Thing/Stuff

Present your topic in an efficient manner. For this reason, you should not use a generic word like “stuff” or “things. For instance:  If you write, “you can learn many things from cricket”, you have not told the reader exactly what they can learn from cricket. Avoid using “thing” in academic writing.

5. Basically

This word will not contribute anything to your sentences but the addition of an extra word. If it’s not essential to the meaning of the sentence, ditch it.

6. In addition to

Another case where the sentence is usually stronger with that word omitted. It’s better to use ‘also’ or ‘as well’ because they have the same meaning but sound more incisive.

7. Good

It does not give an appropriate description of a subject. It is recommended to be more specific. Words to use instead: commendable, reputable, satisfactory, honorable, pleasing.
